Please help me understand TCH better…

Asked by: 24948 views Instrument Rating

Guys I am preparing for my IFR checkride next week.  I am going through everything to prepare for my oral exam.  ON approach plates I see  GS 3.00/TCH 57 (as an example) I understand that the glide slope is 3 degree glideslope to the runway, but 57 is the threshold crossing height of what?

If you where perfectly on the glide slope you would be at 57 feet when over the threshold.

    Cheers

To add to Lucas’ answer. The TCH is where the glideslope antenna will be if you are centered on the glideslope over the threshold. On some Warriors I flew, the GS antenna was on the bottom of the windshield. This means the gear is approximately five feet lower.

This isn’t that big of a deal for small aircraft but can cause issues for large transport aircraft. TERPS requires a minimum TCH depending on the type of aircraft the runway is expected to serve.
