Hi, I wanted to know for the oral portion of the CFII initial checkride, do you get assigned (The day before) a cross country to plan and discuss on the checkride (like commercial, private and Instrument checkride) Or do we have to plan one during the checkride?

Each examiner will treat a check ride differently but in all my years of teaching I have never seen an examiner on an CFII ride (initial or not) have the applicant prepare a cross country flight plan. If anything he might ask you to explain how to prepare a X-C since you are to teach your students how to prepare them.

The best way for you to find out what to expect is to talk to another applicant that went through the same examiner or the instructor who is signing you off.

    Cheers

On my double-eye he had me “plan” a short 300-mile x-c in real-time during the oral. He went to get a cup of coffee, gave me 10-minutes. It was no big deal; he wanted me to explain how I’d fly it if I lost Comms 2-minutes after departing, the whole world was IMC, I had no handheld or GPS, etc., the typical ‘worst-case’ scenario. Just know your lost-comm Route & Altitude rules by heart (you can do this exact exercise in your Lazy Boy at home), and it’s a piece of cake.
