For METARs, TAFs and ATIS, the wind direction is true north.

Do I need to convert that to magnetic north for take off and landing?

Or is it not a big deal?

Winds that are written are always in relation to TRUE north. The winds that are spoken are in relation to MAGNETIC north.

If you get the winds from the tower… No need to correct.

So, just to recap, if the weather report comes from the tower, either directly (voice) or through some automation (ATIS or D-ATIS) controlled by the tower, then all weather information will be referenced to MAGANETIC NORTH.

What about automated airport weather stations? Such as AWOS, ASOS and AWSS?

    Thanks.
