Logging multi time without high altitude endorsement

Asked by: 5609 views , , , , ,
FAA Regulations, Flight Instructor

I was recently offered the opportunity to fly right seat in a king air c90. I have my commercial multi engine, but I am not endorsed for a high altitude aircraft. I was wondering if I would be able to log any flight time if I was sole manipulator of the controls. The pilot I will be flying with is a multi engine ATP, but only a single engine rated cfi, so I don't think he can give me the training and endorsement for high altitude.

You can not log the time unless the PIC is an MEI and then it can be logged as dual given. This is not because of the high alt endorsement but because you are not qualified to fly the airplane.

Yes, you can log time if you are sole manipulator of the controls in an aircraft for which you are rated. A high altitude endorsement is not a rating.

Unless the flight is conducted by an air carrier and your buddy and you are trained and qualified by the air carrier, he cannot give you instruction with his ATP, being only rated for single engine on his CFI.

He could however give you the ground training for the high altitude endorsement.

Since I do not have the high altitude endorsement I would not be able to log it as pic, and since he is not an MEI I would not be able to log it as dual, so would I just log it as multi engine flight time and not multi engine pic.

Of course, you can log it as PIC, you just may not ACT as PIC without the endorsement.

dmac, I’m not sure why you asked the question if you are going to reject the correct answer Kris gave you…

…and come up with an incorrect one of your own: if you can’t log it as PIC (you can for exactly the reason Kris stated) and it’s not dual, there is not one regulation in the Universal Rule of Logging Flight Time (61.51) or anywhere else that would allow you to log even one second.
