BFR timeframe

Asked by: 3864 views FAA Regulations, General Aviation

hello,

I am nearly two years ovedue on my BFR, although I still fly regularly with a friend as an extra set of eyes.  Is there a timeframe where my requirements to renew my certificate will become more strenous, similar to the IPC check needed after one doesnt accomplish the IFR currency requirements in a year?  This information will be very useful to me, and dont afraid to be thorough.  Thank you and safe flying.

I took nearly 12 years off and was ready to go after 2 flights. I did sit in on a ground school to get update airspace info and rules.

Kyle, are you asking whether at some point the regulations require more than the flight review described in FAR 61.56? If that’s your question, no. One hour of ground, one hour of flight instruction, and a CFI’s endorsement of satisfactory completion within the 24 months before you next as as PIC is all the FAA requires from us GA pilots.

If, on the other hand, you are asking whether it will be harder to show your competence as a pilot, that depends on you, your experience up to that point, your skill level, and what you have been doing in the meantime, among other personal factors.

For example, if you have continued to fly regularly (although not as PIC) and maintained your knowledge level, even a long term between flight reviews would not be much of a big deal. OTOH, if you’ve sat around for 15 years with no connection to aviation at all, just completing a successful ground can end up taking a lot of study time.
