Hello folks,

I know every aircraft has an APU. I was just wondering if there are any APU on the ground to supply power to the aircraft

John

Well, not every aircraft has an APU. Many commercial aircraft have them. There are GPU’s which are Ground Power Units. They function in a similar manner to an APU but are not contained within the aircraft’s fuselage.

    Hello John,

Not all aircraft have an auxiliary power unit or APU. Typical APUs supply electrical power and bleed air for the air conditioning system.

Ground power units can only supply electrical power. These GPUs come in both AC and DC versions with variable voltage and amperages.

Some ground units- normally called “huffers”- can supply pneumatic power normally used for starting main engines if the APU is not operational.
