    Ernest K. Gann:

Fate is the Hunter, Flying Circus, Band of Brothers, Gentlemen of Adventure and
    Blaze of Noon.

I ask my students to read Fate is the Hunter.

You can usually find these on Ebay – get the hardcover and unabridged.

A couple of anecdotal collections I like, each told from a first-hand perspective, each by a former columnist for Flying magazine:

    • Bax Seat by Gordon Baxter – His stories deal primarily with light aircraft flying, primarily in his well-worn Mooney M20.

    • View from the Cockpit by Len Morgan – He wrote these pieces based on his years as a pilot for Braniff Airlines, culminating as a Boeing 747 captain.

I also join the poster above in highly recommending the work of Ernest K. Gann, particularly Fate is the Hunter.
