Instruction in families aircraft

Asked by: 1204 views FAA Regulations, Flight Instructor

I am a CFI, although I haven't instructed in over 10 years.   My uncle owns an aircraft and would like me to provide instruction to his son in his airplane.  What are some legalities I should consider?  Since I don't own the aircraft, I don't see anything wrong with this.  I would make sure I am added to the insurance, get current myself (I am currently working in the 121 world and haven't flown single engine in quite some time), and brush up on whats changed since I quit instructing.  Anything else?

As you’ve described it, this is basic Part 61 instruction in an aircraft you are not supplying, so aside from your currency as a CFI-ASE and aircraft currency for VFR flight (not including 100 hour inspection, which is not needed), I don’t know of any FAA rules which have to be met.

Whether being added to the policy is enough to protect your liability exposure requires someone actually reading the policy and may be different depending on whether you are being paid or not.

The other thing I would check on is whether there are any state or local rules which might apply, as well as airport rules dealing with flight instructors.

Those are things I would consider but it’s not intended to be all-inclusive.
