CFI Checkride Tips

I am getting ready for my CFI check ride with the FAA. Are there any helpful tips you can give me to more prepare me for the ride.

    Have flight related discussions as often as possible. During these discussions you can apply what you learn from the FOI, AIH, and other readings.

    Aside from that: Notecards, forums, fly-ins (to talk aviation), and hanging out at the local FBO to talk with current instructors. Finally, and probably the most boring, just start reading all kinds of aviation related books. A couple I’d recommend for flight instructor candidates:

    –The Savvy Flight Instructor – Tips for being professional and getting business as a CFI.

    –Illustrated Guide to Aerodynamics – Understand this text in it’s entirety and, IMO, you’ll know more about aero than 99% of active pilots.

    –Understanding the Sky or Weather Flying – Both are written by two highly experienced pilots. The first a glider pilot, offering wonderful advice on micro meteorology. The later book by a pilot who spent a great deal of his career seeking out and flying through thunderstorms. His book provides a better all around weather look, IMO.

    –Stick and Rudder – A must read for all pilots. His methodology of teaching, one used in the WWII days, provided me with wonderful insights into my own teaching styles and flying style in general.

    –Flight Discipline – “Self-discipline is that which, next to virtue, truly and essentially raises one man above another.” ~Joseph Addison 1704 (Flight Discipline page 74) I believe the quote says it all. This book provides insights in how to improve our discipline through awareness.

    Just like I recommend for private students, go on a mock checkride with a CFI that is not the CFI that you’ve been working with. It’s always great to get a different perspective, a different set of eyes that might pick up on things your CFI has missed. This will make you that much more prepapred.
